I have been apart of the online knitting community for, at least, three years. When I started knitting almost four years ago, I didn’t know there was any type of community where knitters could gather to exchange knowledge, techniques, stories or company. Once I started looking for free online patterns and advice, I instantly came to one of the most famous online knitting magazines, Knitty. I was so grateful a site like that existed! As time went on and I wanted to learn new techniques beyond those needed for a garter stitch scarf, I began to notice the large amount of blogs dedicated to knitting. One of the first blogs I started visiting regularly was BrainyLady. The way she photographed her items and displayed her crafting (and educational) life helped me notice the large online knitting community. Eventually, I found blogs like the Yarn Harlot’s and became addicted to reading them and seeing their photos.

It wasn’t until my boyfriend, Charles, started heavily listening to podcasts that I decided, more as a joke than in all seriousness, to search for knitting podcasts. To both our surprises, they existed. At the time, there weren’t many, but more than enough to have something to listen to. The first knitting podcast I listened to was Cast On. It had the highest rating on iTunes and the most positive feed back. I decided to start from the very beginning and it took me almost eight months to get caught up. Like the blogs, I eventually listened to other podcasts and now I have a slew I listen to regularly, or at least when I have the time.

From Cast On, I learned about the online knitting community website that was still in beta, Ravelry. When I signed up, I thought I’d receive a confirmation email within a few days. Turns out, the list was so long, that it took a few months. I signed up in April 2007 and was accepted on September 12 of that year. I was on that website non-stop for several weeks. Soon, I was able to upload all my projects onto Ravlery. I joined a few groups and I’ve made several friends.

I have really enjoyed actively participating in the knitting community that has formed, in only a few short years, online. But, I’ve decided to go a little deeper and immerse myself in this community more. I have recently started a podcast, The College Knitter, in which I talk about being a young college-aged knitter in New Jersey. I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people that have requested to listen to my podcast. I don’t know how many have subscribed and I’m not sure what they think about it, but I’m am so happy people are listening!

If you’re interested in listening to The College Knitter, you can search iTunes or check me out at Mevio.com.

Yup! I said that I post more FO’s about a week ago. And here we are, well into July and, while I have thought about post, I have not actually shown the initiative. But, its a new day (a very new day, please consider the time), and I am having trouble falling asleep (is that what it takes people?) so I will publish (sounds so professional) a post. On knitting. I am too tried and cranky to do much else at the moment.

The Birthday Gifts:

Pattern: Sunday Market Shawl - Vannessa Carter

Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton Solid - Seaspray – 2 skeins

Particulars: Too thick and to slippery to keep the dropped yarn overs in place. Rolled too much.

I made this shawl for my best friend, Katie, for her 21st birthday party. She likes to sit out on her back porch and drink tea or eat grapes on summer nights. Actually, I just assumes she does these things because I do and that’s what we do together. Sit outside and drink tea. But I’m not actually sure she does this when I’m not around. Anyway, I thought she could wrap this around her several times (note the word “several”) and keep warm.

Though simple, it is so simple that I zoned out several times while knitting it. This could be a benefit but other project had my attention at the same time and it was hard to work on stockinette stitch with lace on the needles! But I persevered (go Lauren) and I finished the damnable thing. The best part was tearing out all the YO’s. Though I was a little nervous I’d drop the wrong stitch and wouldn’t figure it out until the end, I like the excitement and god knows this was the only time this project was “exciting”. Eventually, due to the thick and slippery nature of the yarn, pulling all those knit stitches out was useless and it just rolled up. I was frustrated but it still looked okay while being over 80 inches long. Yep, when I said Katie (who bare reaches 5’1″) could wrap this around her several times, I meant she could make a cocoon to live in it was so big! But she loved it and I loved her for loving it.

Pattern: Saturday Market Bag – Jodie Danenberg

Yarn: Lily Sugar and Cream – Blues, Greens and Yellows

Particulars: Left over yarn “donated” to me though school. Needed to get it out of my stash.

Do you see a pattern here? Apparently I was going for a market theme. Not much to really say. Took me about a day and a half to knit. Simple and easy! I knit in the round so there wouldn’t be any seaming of lace work and I figured it would make it look bigger and more together.

In all, she liked it. Though I’m afraid it was a bit small.

Pattern: Cable Ribbed Socks – Erica Alexander

Yarn: Knit Picks’ Palette – Forest Green – 2 skeins

Particulars: Love the length! Took me forever to get through the first one but finished the second one rather quickly. Lovely color, with specks of blue, red and purple.

Though I was not necessarily pleased that the socks took me so long and they were kind of boring at times, I love the end result. Their nice and long, I can wear them with boots and they will keep me warm. The second sock flew off my needles rather quickly (only a few days) and that might be because of the “product” knitter in me. When I have one sock finished, I have to finish the next so that they are useful! This may be why I don’t suffer from Second Sock Syndrome (SSS).

Alright! Well I’m off to drink some iced tea and read on the porch. Leave comments! Please! Check out my new podcast “The College Knitter” and its website!

I know, its been quite a while. In all honesty, I’ve been wanting to write a post but wanted to wait until I figured how to upload photographs into the actual blog post. It took some time but a lovely video found at the FAQ section of wordpress helped me out a great deal. This post won’t be too long because it is late and I should be heading off to bed soon. So I’ll just update you with some lovely pictures of my knitting within the past few weeks. Enjoy!

Pattern: Working Socks from the Toe Up by Anne Budd – Interweave Knits Summer 2007

Needles: US 3dpns

Yarn: Knit Picks Bare – Peruvian Highland Wool in Fingering Weight – Purple – 2 skeins

For Mother’s Day. It took much longer than I would have liked (a little over a week) but she loves them! My first toe ups and the heel proves it.

Pattern: Tyrolean Stockings by Anne Budd – Interweave Knits Fall 2007

Needles: US 3 dpns

Yarn: Patons Classic Wool Merino – Wheat – 2 skeins

Apparently, I’m really liking Anne Budd’s patterns. I have just come to this conclusion. These stockings took me about a month (or so I said on Ravelry). Definitely several weeks. While I was knitting these, I was traveling several hours between three college campuses (two different institutions) and my house, trying to keep up with the three literature classes (which I received A’s in each!) and coming down with a terrible case of pneumonia! Yes, these socks were put on the back burner several times. On top of that, I screwed up the center cable pattern and was just too exhausted to go back and fix it. I thought I would never finish these socks, but low and behold, I did! I love them! Though, when they were finished in April, it was much to warm to wear thick, worsted weight stockings. The only problem I have with the socks is that one of the feet is a little too short. I must go back and fix the foot before winter.

I changed the pattern up a bit so that the cables would go away each other instead of in the same direction. I like how this turned out a lot more than what the original concept. Its a skinny scarf and only took me a couple days to complete. Though its small, its very warm and comfortable. A beautiful green color!

A quick day project. Or two days? I did it a bit differently because I could not comprehend some of the instructions. Also, instead of using a knit i-cord as a drawstring, I used some left over ribbon. I use it all the time! Very beautiful, soft and cushy.

The jacket was knit in the left overs of the Tyrolean Stockings. Knit up beautifully! I feel in love with the pattern and the smocked stitch! I’d like to make a couple more of these in the near future. For a while, if you cannot already tell, I was obsessed with small, “instant gratification” projects. This is one of the many.

Well, that’s enough pictures for now. I will update on more FO’s in the near future. Hopefully within the next couple days. I started typing this entry on June 23 so I would like to state that my brother just turned 21 today! Happy birthday!

Catch you later!

The school year is almost over and I am finally able to sit back, relax and entertain my creative writing juices. I picked up the book Blue Angel by Francine Prose around Christmas, but seeing as I have been reading about a hundred and fifty pages a week since June for classes, I have had no desire to pick up a book. But today was a beautiful spring day and nature always makes me want to run outside and read. Though I did not read “outside”, per say, I did sit on my back porch with crossed legs and tea (which seems to be unable to remain warm) and read. Oh! It is lovely! Makes me want to write again. For those of you who do not know, my main craft is writing (poetry to be more exact). Though I love the fiber arts and have been spending a lot of time with that wonderful craft these past three years, my passion lies with the pen and paper. Anywho, its a great read! Hard to put down. And when I do, I want to pick it right back up. Like right now. I’m about 90 pages in (it was a slow reading day for me) but I’m hoping to get a couple more in before my eyes give.

On knitting news, I am working on a pair of bright purple socks for my mother for Mother’s Day. I’m half way finished the leg of the sock (I am knitting them toe up because she likes a long leg), which is good. Though I fear not good enough. I still have another sock to knit and I doubt I will get around to in time. I will (I am determined) to finish the one sock by Mother’s Day so at least I can present the work in progress to her. Show her I am working on it. Hopefully finish the socks by the end of May.

Knitting has been a bit of a struggle for me recently. Do not get me wrong, I still love to knit and I am fantasizing about projects, but not as much as I normally do. I think after being sick for so many weeks and having so much school work and working an internship an hour away from home until 2am really shoved my knitting to the back burner. Oh well. With summer only days away (well, summer break at least), I am sure that my passions for knitting, reading and writing will come back with a vengeance.

And I promise, I will learn how to put pictures up here eventually!

Unfortunately it does not seem like I have a lot of that now a days. I’m keeping busy finishing up the school year and preparing for graduation in May. I always forget how hectic this time of year gets. I guess I just block it from my memory.

A lot has been going on in my life. I have been nominated and received a couple awards and am waiting to hear about some others. I received the English Academic Award for my school. I am very proud of that for the mere fact that my college only has two full time professors and both of them nominated me for the award. I am being told that I am dedicated and determined and love to analysis literature and poetry. Mainly poetry though, as one of my literature professors can attest to. These assertions are all correct. It was nice to attend a small banquet with the boyfriend and received such pleasant acknowledgment of my skills in English and literature. It gave me that extra little push which will help me finish out the school year.

I am currently taking twelve credits since I have over exceeded the course levels you can take at a community college. Three of the classes are literature courses and since its the end of the semester, and the professors have realized they have not covered the entire book yet, they are cramming things in. A decent amount of reading, though I have learned that reading is not that big of a deal anymore. Its funny how fast one can get used to reading almost 150 pages a week. I do not have that much to read, mostly about fifty to seventy pages a week at this point, but that is simple to me now. Do not get me wrong, during the summer when I “fun read”, I have a tendency to read over 200 pages in a day, completely possible. But during the academic year, it can get rough when you are jumping from poet to author to short story to novel. Especially when you are taking three different literature courses that cover different time periods and nations. Though the reading is not the tough part, it is the essays. I have three left before May 1st. For American literature, I have to complete a character analysis of “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” written by T.S. Eliot. I am almost finished. It is due on Monday so I have to finish it this weekend, hopefully today since I am probably going to be out all day tomorrow. The entire thing is written but its a matter of editing it for the second and, potentially, third time. Editing is the easy part though. For Holocaust literature, I have to watch a film, most likely I am going to watch “The Apt Pupil”, and write a critique. Easy really. It will only take me a day or two to watch the film and write the essay. Another couple days to sit down and edit the piece. I am going to work on that this coming weekend since it is due April 30th. Lastly, the dreaded English literature research paper. We only have two papers for that class, both research essays. The first one, which was handed in before March, I wrote about William Blake’s poetry and how it exemplifies his feelings about the religion and the liberty of the individual. I received an A on the paper and was pleased. I have an A in the class currently but am a bit concerned about what I will write about for this coming research essay. Since I wrote a character analysis of J. Alfred Prufrock, I think I am going to research how Eliot expressed his own disgust with sex and sexuality through the protagonist, Prufrock. I have about four pages on the character analysis, with some research I can definitely get another two to three pages and reformat the essay to that particular thesis for English literature. I think that sound fabulous. That will save me a lot of time, energy and stress.

So as of this moment, I have A’s in all my literature classes and a high B in Biology, which I am very proud of. I will be transferring to Rowan University in the fall and am looking forward to an easy transition. I will only be taking one literature class, which will be very strange, Shakespeare I. I will also be taking four education courses since I have to catch up on the teacher education aspect of my degree. So we will see how all that pans out.

In the world of knitting, I was knitting for quite a while. I ended up finishing two pairs of socks, a camera case and a skinny scarf. I even started on some knee high socks which I absolutely adore. Unfortunately, school has gotten in the way of my knitting time and everything has been put on the back burner. I am thinking of picking up the needles to start a pair of socks for my mother for Mother’s Day since I really do not know what else to give her but I am unsure of the time restraint. We will see. Once finals come around, all my reading and essays will be complete and I will only need to study. Actually, two of my classes, Biology and Holocaust literature, will finish up at the end of April, so I will only have to worry about American and English literature. Fantastic!

A point of reference, I am still unsure of how to upload pictures using wordpress. I have not really played around with the applications but am hoping that I will figure it out shortly. This is the main reason why I have not been blogging. I hate putting up a blog entry with no pictures. I feel pictures attract one to read the entry in its entirety. I will hopefully figure it all out soon, that way I can update you on my progress in the knitting world. I am also thinking of using this to update friends and family to what I am up to but I am not sure about that just yet.

Let me know what you think! Leave comments! Let me know that its worth my while to keep posting.

Have a great day in this beautiful weather!

This has been a very long week and I’m still trying to figure out how to use wordpress so please forgive me for the messy first try. I am quite tired and bogged down with work but just wanted to let you all know I’m still alive. And prepare for a future post:

I just realized I am not quite sure how to upload photographs. That will be for another time.

It’s January! I can’t believe how fast the time is going! It is quite amazing. And I will be starting classes again next week (sadly). I am not looking forward to going back. But I only have four classes (12 credits) this semester and my schedule is looking pretty damn good. So I can’t complain too much.During the break, I was able to get a ton of knitting done! Fantastic! My first real finished project after Christmas (or during, can’t remember) are the Monkey socks by Cookie A. I had such a great time knitting them! I got the yarn through the Knit One, Tea Two swap that ended in October. Finally got around to knitting the yarn and this is what came of them. These are my first knit socks with sock yarn!

Pattern: Monkey by Cookie A. from knitty.com
Needles: US 3 bamboo dpns
Yarn: KPPPM, blues and greens

Loved the pattern. I completed both socks in less than a week! I could only do that over break. The pattern was easy to follow and was just plain interesting. I love the socks and am already wearing them through.I also worked on the two-tone shrug from Fitted Knits by Stefanie Japel. My best friend gave me this yarn for my birthday (in November) and it was going to be Foliage from Knitty.com but I decided hats really don’t look that good on me and I have to figure something else out. So I came up with this:

Pattern: Two-Tone Shrug from Fitted Knits by Stefanie Japel
Needles: US 9 bamboo circ. (lengths 29 in. and 16 in.)
Yarn: Malabrigo worsted weight in Cinnabar

Here is the beloved action shot! My head was sort of chopped off accidentally. Its okay.

I have also been working on on a sweater for the boyfriend. We went to Woolbearers in Mount Holly, NJ and found some yarn (wool, mohair blend) and its coming along nicely. I took this picture about two or three days ago. Now, I’m almost finished the left sleeve and will hopefully start on the right today. I’d really like to finish this before he goes back to school (January 22).

Pattern: Mixology from Son of a Stitch ‘n Bitch
Needles: US 10 1/2 bamboo circ. (lengths 29 in. and 16 in.) & US 9 bambo circ. (lengths 29 in. and 16 in.)
Yarn: Lamb’s Pride Bulky in Sable

It knits up very quickly, though I am really hating the sleeves. At this point, I just want it finished. Its plain stockinette almost all the way through and its getting to me! But, like I said, I hope to have it finished by the time he goes back to school. This is still pretty plausible. In other news, Christmas went swimmingly! I got a ton of great stuff. Some knitting books, yarn money, sweatshirts and blankets (I’m always cold) from the family. The boyfriend got me some pj bottoms, perfume (Bella by Mary Kay, his mom’s a rep.) and a necklace and earing set. The best friend and her family got me a heated blanket and pjs (I’m always cold) along with some other small nick nacks that are around the room. Oh, and some white chocolate body wash/lotion, doesn’t smell that grand in the bottle, but god, it smells good in the shower! I’ve also been spending time with the boyfriend and best friend and that’s always lovely. Gone out to dinner, to the comedy clubs, walked around Mount Holly’s High Street and just hung out. Its been a wonderful break and I hate to go back to school at this point. But its coming. What you gonna do?

I enjoy how I schedule and time my life by semester. Everything is school related. Gosh! I finished my semester with three As (Physical Science Lab, American Literature, Poetry of the Holocaust) and one B (English Literature). I am still waiting on two more classes to post their grades (American Sign Language and Physical Science) but I pretty much know what I got in those classes. I am supposed to know by tomorrow, around noon, my final grades. My GPA is still pretty high, exciting! And all those hours spent on papers and re-doing papers was well worth it!

I also applied to two four-year institutions and I am waiting to hear back from them. I sent my applications off about a week or so ago. Just waiting now. (I’m in community college for those who do not know).

On the knitting front! I finished all of my Christmas knitting. I am thinking on trying to finish one more scarf for my mom, but since I knit her the afghan, I’m not worried if I don’t finish the scarf. I might just give it to her for Valentine’s Day instead. Actually! That’s a great idea! Go me! Since I finished my Christmas knitting early, I started my own personal knitting up again. With the craziness of the semester and the Christmas knitting (started in October), I haven’t really had time to knit anything for myself. So here is my Calorimetry:

It was the best picture I could get at the time. I’ll have a better one coming soon.

It was knit out of Paton Classic Merino Wool, I forget the colorway. It only took me five hours (in one sitting, a lot of tv). I love it. I was a little worried that the color would not look good next to my hair, but I think it looks pretty good. I have made several of these for friends and family, but this was the first one I made for myself that I actually like! The last one I made was nice, but the colors matched nothing in my wardrobe. Bummer.

Now, I’m working on a floppy hat called Spin Me Right ‘Round, Baby! I saw the pattern on Ravelry (come find me, I’m “Lauren3″) and fell in love with it. I would prefer to have a different color instead of a dark gray. With my blond hair, brown would look lovely or a bright green (I am really starting to love green!) would also look nice. But I’m trying to knit through some of my stash and I had some left over Paton Classic Merino Wool from the boyfriend’s R-31 project (which I am still working on, I hate zippers and felting) that I thought would be great. I took this picture yesterday. I only knit the ribbing and the five rows of stockinette. Today, I’ve added about 2 1/2 – 3 inches of the swirl pattern. Its starting to really look good:

Kind of blurry. Sorry.

I’m knitting it on size three instead of the size four called. She used sock yarn and I’m using worsted weight. Big differences, but gauge is working mighty fine, plus, I want something warmer. I thought this would be great because it could easily hold my hair back on those chilly, windy days.

Alright, enough about me, now one to the Christmas gifts. I accidentally wrapped a couple people’s gifts before I could take the picture. But I’ll just get a picture of them wearing it, not a big deal. I’d prefer that really. Anywho, I crocheted two items for Christmas! Yay! I taught myself how to crochet. Good times.

So, my mom was bugging me to make a jacket for our dog. I refused and still think I will continue to refuse. I will not put my dog in a jacket! So, I made her a little throw which she can lay on. We have wooden floors in our front hallway, where she likes to lay. The floors can get mighty cold. This will be the solution:

Dog, on a throw, on a carpet.

It was made out of junk acrylic yarn I had in my stash since I started knitting. It looks nice and she seems to like it. It will be wrapped up for her for Christmas. Or just handed over. Probably just handed over. But I wanted to get a picture of her laying on it as soon as possible.

I also made my mother a small afghan. Very small. I didn’t measure and I have no clue how many stitches I started out in the chain (I taught myself to crochet on this, leave me be) but it looks nice. Good enough to wrap around her shoulders or lay on her lap on those chilly nights. I have been meaning to make this type of thing for the past year. I kept trying to knit it but that didn’t work out at all. I hated all the stockinette stitch and garter and I didn’t know how I was going to sew it together. So I thought, since crocheting afghans is a big deal in this family, I might as well learn:

Pretty!

For my first crochet project, I think it turned out well. I had to put a boarder around it because the edges looked horrible! And I am not quite sure how to sew in ends on double crochet. Oh well. First time crochet project since I was eight. A mighty improvement since eight. Now, its all wrapped up and ready to be given away.

And since I thought this was cute, I had to take a picture and post:

Hello everyone. Long time no see. I must admit, there is a reason for that. This past weekend has been hell-ish and this coming week seems like it will turn out a similar way! Gah! There is no rest for the college student who decided it was a great idea to become an English major. That research paper I did in one night? Remember? Yeah, well it was great! By far one of the best I have written. She hands it back to me last Thursday and gives me until today (Tuesday) to redo it! She doesn’t even give me a reason why it wasn’t “up to her standards”. So I tore my hair out attempting to write another research paper in less than five days!

I broke down a couple times (seriously, who wouldn’t?) but I got it finished and now I’m looking forward (not in a joyous way) to my next essay. A research paper on Gulliver’s Travels (Book Four). I chose the Yahoos and am writing a paper on the following thesis: “In Part Four of Gulliver’s Travels, the Yahoos are used as a satirical device to reflect the bad traits of mankind including behavior, intelligence and vice.” Sounds good, right? Yep. It is now just a matter of organizing my information in a manageable and logical way. Bah! I am hoping to get a chunk of it out of the way after I finish here. But we’ll see how far I get.

Last week, for Thanksgiving, the boyfriend came over with some flowers to wish me and mine a wonderful Thanksgiving. Recently, he’s been adorning me with flowers. He gave me half a dozen roses for my birthday, autumn flowers (that smelled like cinnamon) and wintery flowers this weekend because I was stressing out so much. Here are the cinnamon, autumn flowers:

Beautiful!

Then, I got some knitting done over Thanksgiving. I picked up the Ribbed Lace Bolero again after about two months of sitting at the bottom of my closet. I only had the three inches of ribbing completed when I picked it up and I am almost finished. I need about five more rows and I can start the three inches of ribbing and cast off. I hope to finish it before the end of the weekend. But we’ll see how I survive this week:

In the well lit “piano” room.

My best friend and I got together of Thanksgiving break and she gave me my birthday gift. Malabrigo kettle dyed pure merino wool in cinnabar (194) in worsted weight. I received two skeins! Beautiful! I am going to make Foliage from Knitty Fall 2007. I can’t believe it is the right yarn and everything! I think I’m going to double it up to make the chunky one. I want to make it a bit looser, like a berate. My hair is too massive to do anything else.

Malabrigo. Kettle dyed pure merino wool in cinnabar.

Lastly, I held my first Open Mic Night as the new Creative Writers Guild president last Wednesday. It went swimmingly! We had over 40 people show up (not all of them are in the picture) and we had over 22 performances! I was thrilled! I was even told it was the best open mic the school has had in a while (YAY!).

The crowd!

Okay. I think its about time I start working on my essay. My goal is to finish it tomorrow night. Or maybe I’ll work on my Christmas knitting. We’ll see.

Night!

I have finished my research paper! Thank the good lord above, in some strange universe or realm, (s)he has allowed me to start research, formulate a thesis statement, provide an outline with quotations, write the paper (including a cover and works cited page) and revise it in a matter of twenty-four hours.

I am about to die! Let us just hope the endless hours researching in Border’s and typing up the paper pay off. I really need an A on this paper!

But it’s late and I need to call the boyfriend to wake him up and let him know I finished my paper. He may get mad, but I don’t care!

Evening folks!
